Workplace violence includes both words or gestures. It includes verbal, psychological and physical assault.
Violence in the workplace is a serious issue and affects personnel in all professional sectors. Some workers are more likely to experience this type of violence because their duties involve a number of risk factors.
In an effort to better understand the phenomenon and to reduce its impact, the administration of the Centre jeunesse de la Montérégie (CJM) has agreed to and supported the research conducted by the VISAGE research team among CJM educators. This study revealed that:
- 25.5% of respondents were psychologically affected by an act of violence during the past year. The most widely reported consequences were hypervigilance, sleep disturbance, avoidance and irritability (24.8% women/29.2% men).
However,
- 71% of respondents reported that serious violence is normal, that it is part of their job (72% women/65% men);
- 17% report that they would be judged by their colleagues if they complained about the violence committed against them in the course of their work (14% women/31% men);
- 37% report that they would be judged by their employer if they complained about the violence committed against them in the course of their work (36% women/45% men);
- 13% report that it is pointless to talk about violence at work unless someone has an obvious injury (11% women/25% men);
- 50% report that they do not know the policies and procedures in place to obtain support after experiencing violence (51% women/46% men).
Feel free to talk to your colleagues and loved ones about any act of verbal, psychological or physical violence that you experience at work and report it to your employer.
