Awareness Message – Police Officers
Leave a CommentSpread the word! We need change!
Workplace violence includes both words or gestures. It includes verbal, psychological and physical assault.
Violence in the workplace is a serious issue and affects personnel in all professional sectors. Some workers are more likely to experience this type of violence because their duties involve a number of risk factors.
According to a survey conducted by the VISAGE research team,
- 81% of police officers have experienced or witnessed violence at work (78% women/84% men);
- 29% of that number have been affected by an act of serious violence (23% women/37% men).
However,
- 63% believe they would be judged by their peers if they complained (68% women/56% men);
- 48% believe they would be judged by their employer if they complained (58% women/38% men);
- 25% think it is pointless to talk about violence at work unless someone has an obvious injury (28% women/20% men);
- 43% do not know the policies and procedures in place to obtain support after experiencing violence (45% women/41% men).
Feel free to talk to your colleagues and loved ones about any act of verbal, psychological or physical violence that you experience at work and report it to your employer.
